〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Ruka
CHARACTER AGE: In canon she's 11, but since I'm picking her back up with C&C/MoM development, she's 18
SERIES: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
CHRONOLOGY: Mid-64, before the time skip
CLASS: Hero, Unfortunately
HOUSING: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ randomize me captain

BACKGROUND:
So, Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's is a semi-dystopian near-future setting, where—aside from the "we play card games to advance the plot" and "also there are dragons" parts—much of the series conflict comes from class strife, the destructive power of the police state, how capitalism makes you try to drown children in order to get ahead in life, and all that fun other Saturday Morning cartoon fare. Ruka, although billed as part of the main ensemble, is unfortunately both 1: a child, and 2: a girl, in a series focusing almost entirely on teenage boys and adult men, so despite having weirder mystic powers than everyone else, her impact on the major plot events is minimal at best.

She's the younger sibling in a set of fraternal twins; their family is exceedingly upper class, but since their parents abandoned them were never important to the plot were always traveling, this resulted mostly in social isolation as the kids grew up in a metaphoric ivory tower with almost no social contact with the outside world; for the most part, Ruka was taken care of only by her brother. Even from a young age, she had the mysterious power to see and communicate with invisible monster spirits that inhabited the world, though it's possible nobody believed her; presumably as a consequence of this she became ambiguously "sickly," and as such could not leave the house often or otherwise enjoy childhood. As a result, Rua began to resent her, since she held him back from doing the things he wanted, like go out and make friends and go see professional racing/dueling matches in person instead of on TV.

When she was three years old, Ruka fell into a coma, and found herself in a world of these monster spirits. In this realm, Ruka was essentially asked to discard her life in the human world so that she could forever stay in the spirit world as its protector, for her "pure heart" had the power to repel any person with evil intentions. While she initially agreed, Ruka was overcome with loneliness and fear, and eventually ran away from the spirit world; following the sound of her brother's voice calling her name, Ruka awoke from her coma after a month, after which point she and Rua both completely forgot about this whole affair until much later.

Ruka spent almost all of the rest of her young childhood housebound, continuing to grow up sickly and frail for reasons that are never explained (but are implied to be a result of her powers); she never even attended school.

Eight years pass, and after some adventures in housing criminals, identity-borrowing, and card game tournaments, Ruka unlocked those memories of her coma and the spirit world, as well as discovered that she was one of a group of five "Signers"—people who had been bestowed strange birthmarks and stranger powers and who, together, could summon "the Crimson Dragon," which has more than once been referred to as an embodiment of God. Of course, once you have any destined group of heroes, a destined group of villains must turn up as well, and turn up they did. The so-called "Dark Signers," awoken from the dead by the sheer desire for revenge and some shady deals with "Earthbound Gods," used their equally necrotic powers to kidnap and consume huge quantities of human souls, to be used to resurrect those sealed demons in an attempt to, well, turn the world of the living into the world of the dead. Which is how you get iconic #moods like this.

In any case, when the time for conflict between the Signers and Dark Signers came to a head, Ruka was the first of the Signers to agree to fight — mostly because despite feeling abandoned by her parents and off-and-on resented by her brother, Ruka was still the person in this ensemble with the least amount of debilitating emotional baggage. In order to fulfill her part of the dragon-ordained destiny, she had to explode in a pillar of light return to the spirit world of her childhood and undo the damage that had been wrought in her absence, as well as drive out the evil forces that had invaded and captured all the spirits she had befriended. After doing so — over the course of several episodes consisting of adventures in reversing gravity, terrible disguises, riding lions, and worrying about her brother — she returned to the human world, where her brother had attempted to fight her opponent in her place, like a goddamn idiot. Even though losing would have meant his death (and he hadn't won a single match this entire series). Ruka took over the match in Rua's place, and within only a couple moves had completely reversed the otherwise hopeless situation and, subsequently, killed her undead rival with the power of sparkles and sunshine.

The other Signers defeated the remaining Dark Signers, and even took out the undead King of the Underworld. The imprisoned souls were released, and all the Dark Signers were even returned to life, and mostly given amnesia. (Well, except the guy Ruka killed, who wouldn't come back until a cameo splash frame at the end of the series.) Actually, everyone in the whole damn city that wasn't a Signer or chilling with them wound up with amnesia, so whatever. THE END.

PERSONALITY:
At the start of the series, Ruka was as sheltered as they come: she didn't attend traditional schools, she hardly if ever went outside, she didn't have any friends her own age, and her parents were never home as she grew up. She was naive about the outside world, and repeatedly demonstrated throughout the early series a sort of underdeveloped understanding of other people's motivations and emotions. However, she's far from stupid; she's pretty smart as far as mathematics and language and other such subjects go. It's just that her entire childhood was wrapped up in three things: the voices of the monster spirits only she could hear, her physical frailty, and her brother.

Ruka and Rua tell us multiple times that Ruka's always been too sickly to go outside. No medical cause is actually given for this, but she spent roughly eight to eleven years confined to their house with only her brother and those spirits for company. Rua admits that he resented Ruka for this: he internally blamed her for the fact he couldn't do things normal kids did. When Ruka realized this, spent a great deal of time resenting herself for being a burden on her brother, and even refers to herself as a "ball and chain." While she's not overly apologetic in general, this history has led Ruka to be keenly aware of her failings: she faults herself for any suffering her brother or the spirits endure, and even after learning about the destiny of the Signers and what that entails, Ruka insists that Rua will always be the better hero than she—despite the fact that he doesn't bear a heroic destiny.

Likewise, where she is quick to blame herself, she will just as quickly deflect praise. Repeatedly she explains that she's not strong on her own, or not a hero, or that her skills in any given subject are not that great. But no matter how often she denies it, she is a good person and does act the part of the hero. She's the first of our main characters to sign up for Stopping the Apocalypse duty, and even though she's expressed fear of failure repeatedly, she sucks it up and pushes forward to protect the spirit world—fulfilling a promise she made when she was only three. In more heroic settings, she tends to give the impression of sunshine and rainbows (often literally), but she is capable of darker mentalities. She deems that people who harm the spirits, her brother, or her friends are "unforgivable," and will do everything within her power to make sure that whoever that is never is able to hurt the people she cares about ever again. In one circumstance, this was merely ejecting a trespasser from her psyche; in another, it resulted in a character's death—and unlike every other villain on that team, this one did not get to come back for the next season. Ruka is also the only Signer who did not forgive or accept the failings of their Dark Signer opponent. Relatedly, she's surprisingly not a doormat, and will argue with adults with full confidence and willpower in order to get what she wants, no matter their social standing or perceived power.

Despite all this, Ruka comes off as pretty ordinary. She often hedges what she says, she picks on her brother when he's being a nuisance, she likes fairies and unicorns and the color pink and sleeps with a teddy bear, and gets pretty annoyed when people make fun of her. She's impulsive, and almost never explains herself before jetting from the scene. She hates being left alone, and feels distressed when her friends try to leave her behind; for as much as she says life is cozy without their parents around, it's left a huge void, and she latches onto new bonds quickly. However, she's not much openly social, often letting Rua do most of the talking, or hiding behind him when she feels upset or worried. Despite her dependence on others, she'll complain vocally if they're slipping or showing weakness, often berating them for tears or not being manly enough. Yet for as harsh as she can be, she almost always softens immediately after. Her sternness stems from how much she cares.

The version I'll be playing is the one that had previously existed in both C&C and MoM. Her original run was from February 2009 to November 2015, followed by a short stint from February to June of 2016.With a cumulative ~7 years in-game, she developed quite a bit from an 11-year-old shut-in.

To cover some of the basics but still keep it short: her time in the City was mostly characterized by forming emotional bonds with other characters and having those bonds be broken in increasingly shitty ways — characters replaced with AU selves, updated-and-then-reverted in convoluted ways that erased their CR but not their memories, de-aging, extremely rapid aging, skipping town because they're having an emotional crisis, and so on, and so forth. As she already had abandonment issues, the repeated emotional blows diminished her sense of self-value. If nobody was going to care about her feelings or support her when she needed it, or if everybody was going to forget her or leave her alone anyway, then it felt to her as though there wasn't much point trying to form genuine connections with anyone. In a bid of self-preservation, she started fronting as callous and indifferent as she could get away with, trying to keep her emotional distance from others, but spoilers it turns out that's hard when you're an empath who still wants to help people.

Additionally, growing up #empathetic in an unstable environment with an inconsistent support network has left Ruka with some heavy emotional burdens as copied/stolen from the artifacts she's encountered. Experiencing the sensations of other people's traumas, hurts, deaths, murders, and so forth, have at times made it difficult for her to find her own natural emotions for a given situation — a sort of, "this party is so loud I can't hear myself think" scenario. Pushing down on all emotions — those she's borrowed and her own — has since become something she's felt the need to do for most circumstances in general. While this helps in terms of not presenting like she actually cares about anyone, she still hasn't figured out a way to keep herself from getting attached when people are genuinely nice to her.

Or, in short: she started out a little messed up but could have gotten better, but instead she wound up in this fuckin set of universes and her emotions are fucked forever.

★︎ Psychic Shields: When Ruka or those in her general proximity are endangered, the mark/scar on her right arm glows bright red, and a large translucent red/pink sphere automatically emerges. It encompasses her as well as her close surroundings, protecting herself and others. It's demonstrated to be approximately 9' in diameter, though this size can vary based on the situation. In series, this shield has been able to repel soul destruction, fire, lasers, physical assault, and for some reason can protect its occupants from having their memories altered if someone is fucking around with space-time and altering the past. Because that's totally necessary?

Additionally, with some effort, Ruka can launch this shield of her own power and manipulate its size and strength. With even more effort, she can create energy spheres like this where she's not stuck in the middle like a gashapon capsule toy, and can likewise manipulate their size, strength, and even where they go. So, someone's falling off a building and is probably going to meet a pretty painful death hitting the concrete below? There's a bubble for that.

★︎ Empathy/Psychometry: When people have strong emotions, they form "bonds"—with people and with objects. When Ruka touches something inanimate to which someone has imparted these emotions, Ruka will be able to experience them first-hand. In the series, this is actually Ruka messing around with other people's decks of cards and her communicating with the monster spirits that inhabit them, but as the game lacks both cards and monsters, this subset of the power is being converted to just regular touch-based empathy. Ruka is also an empath by proximity, able to sense the emotional states of the other "Signers" at different points in the series; this will also be broadened out to apply to regular people. In essence, "empathy" will allow Ruka to feel how someone is feeling now, while psychometry will let her feel how they felt six months ago when they stabbed a dude with this knife she's holding.
